Boba Fett Origin Film in the Works as Star Wars Spinoff

Yesterday was Star Wars day and with that came a lot of news of future Star Wars related projects.  The biggest was the set photos and character details for some of the major players in the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens film that opens in December.  You can read more about that here.  But later in the day came another big story, the second stand alone Star Wars Anthology movie will be an origin story for everyone’s favorite space bounty hunter Boba Fett.

This news came as a bit of a surprise after all the went on the past few days.  A few weeks ago was the Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim, California and that’s when the news broke about the other anthology film, Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One.  That’s going to be directed by Gareth Edwards and will be more of a space war movie that centers around band of resistance fighters uniting to steal the plans to the Death Star (details here).  Josh Trank, the original director to the second anthology movie, wasn’t present at the event due to being “very ill” and only two days ago he “stepped down” from the project (it’s believed he was fired, you can read more about the details here).  Since no information was provided at Star Wars celebration when there was still a director on board, it was a little unexpected to learn more about the second movie now that they are searching for one.

The decision to make one of these stand alone features about Boba Fett, however, was not unexpected.  Back when Disney officially purchased the rights to the Star Wars Universe there were tons of rumors about spinoff movies and the concept of a Boba Fett solo film was always among them.  Despite not doing much in the original trilogy (or maybe because of that fact, he was mysterious and just looked cool in the background of every scene he was in), Fett continues to be a fan favorite.  For a little rundown on the background of the famed bounty hunter, here’s a snippet from Wookieepedia (yes, Star Wars has it’s own branch of wikipedia):

“Boba Fett was a Mandalorian warrior and bounty hunter. He was the only unaltered clone of the famed Jango Fett, created in 32 BBY as unit A0050, one of the first of many Fett replicas designed to become part of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was raised as Jango’s son. Jango taught Boba much, training him to become a skilled bounty hunter as was his father-figure before him.”

It is unclear if the actor who played the young Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones (Daniel Logan) or the actor who played Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison) are potentially up for the role.  Actually, nothing else is known about the film aside from the main character.  There’s  possibility that the film could include Jabba the Hutt or other Hutts, a younger Han Solo could cross paths with the bounty hunter (which could open the door to the Han Solo origin spinoff that was also rumored), or any number of routes as this movie could be used to explore the seedy underbelly of the the galaxy.

Who would you like to see int he role as Boba Fett?  Are there any Fett storylines from the Extended Universe that you would like to see explored in his solo outing?  The Boba Fett film does not yet have a release date, but I will keep you posted on any further development.
